Star Wars: Obiwan Kenobi -the movie -the series -the character

'Star Wars': Ewan McGregor in Talks for an Obi-Wan Kenobi Series for Disney+

August 15, 2019 5:21pm by Borys Kit

The actor has played the role in three films.

The Jedi Order is once again calling Ewan McGregor into service.

The actor, who famously portrayed the masterful Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi in three Star Wars movies, is in negotiations to reprise the role in a Kenobi-centered series for Disney+, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The development positions the series as the third Star Wars title being made for the upcoming streaming platform, which is set to launch this fall and is meant to take aim at rival digital services such as Netflix while taking Disney and its brands into new audience realms.Disney+ and Lucasfilm, the producer behind all things Star Wars, are already making The Mandalorian, a series based on the class of warriors and bounty hunters first embodied by fan-favorite Boba Fett, and an untitled series characterized as a prequel to 2016's Rogue One featuring Rebel Alliance officer Cassian Andor, with Diego Luna reprising the role.

No timeline or creative talent for the Kenobi project were revealed. The Mandalorian is set to debut in November as a launch title for Disney+, while the Rogue One prequel has Stephen Schiff (The Americans) writing and showrunning.

Kenobi is a central figure in the Star Wars mythos. In the original 1977 movie, he is a desert-dwelling and war-weary hermit who later proves to be a wise and powerful warrior. Kenobi briefly mentors a young Luke Skywalker before being cut down by Darth Vader, his former pupil. Alec Guinness played the character, earning an Oscar nomination.

The character also played a central role in the George Lucas-directed prequels, which recount the origin of Vader and his betrayal of Kenobi and the Jedis.

In 2017, THR revealed that Disney and Lucasfilm were developing a feature spinoff for the character, to have been directed by Stephen Daldry, the Oscar-nominated helmer behind Billy Elliot and The Hours. However, those plans, and other movie entries, were shelved after the poor performance of another spinoff, Solo: A Star Wars Story, in summer 2018.

McGregor last starred in Disney's live-action Winnie the Pooh movie, 2017's Christopher Robin. He has two major franchise plays on the docket: The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, which is set to open in November, and a villainous turn in Birds of Prey, the DC Comics-based action-adventure featuring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

McGregor is repped by UTA and Sloane Offer.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie May Film in 2019

Lucasfilm is developing an Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars standalone movie, which may shoot in 2019.

Lucasfilm is apparently planning a standalone Star Wars film focusing on Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. THR revealed that Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) is in early talks to direct the film. The movie is in the very early stages of development. As far as we know, it still has no script at the moment or even a writer attached. If he signs on, Daldry would oversee the development and scripting of the standalone.

It's not clear what sort of release window Lucasfilm is considering for this standalone movie. It would almost certainly be after 2019's Episode IX. It could fit into the 2020 slot if there isn't already another movie taking its place. Omega Underground spotted something that indicates the film could shoot in 2019 at Pinewood Studios in the UK, under the working title of "Joshua Tree."

There's no confirmation that Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan in the Prequel Trilogy, will reprise his role for the standalone film, although the actor has been vocal in the past about being open to returning as the Jedi Master. As recently as April 2017, McGregor voiced his interest in reprising his role, saying that it'd be a good segue between the Prequel and Original Trilogies. With Rogue One a resounding success, this is certainly a good approach. "There's no official offer, and I haven't met them about it or anything," said McGregor. "But I've always said that I'd be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they've got films to make until the 2020s, so I don't think it's going to happen soon if it happens at all."

Back in April, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the company would begin planning more Star Wars spinoffs this year. "To be honest, we are beginning to talk about [the spin-offs] right now," Kennedy said. "We have four or five weeks immersed in the film Han Solo and we are about to read the script of Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX, so we have a lot of work at the moment. In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop here."

This might mean that we'll soon get official announcements for the Kenobi movie as well as a Yoda movie and a Boba Fett film, which actually almost happened back when director Josh Trank (Chronicle) was attached to the project.

Everything we know about the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show on Disney+Return of the Jedi: Ewan McGregor to star in Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+

By Chris Gates and Brendan Hesse — Posted on August 16, 2019 4:38AM PST 08.16.19 - 4:38AM

Ewan McGregor is a Jedi once more. The veteran actor has agreed to slip back into Obi-Wan Kenobi's robe for a limited series set to premiere on Disney+, according to reports from Variety and other major entertainment outlets.

No other details about the series are available, although fans expect to learn more at Disney's D23 convention, which runs August 23-25. The series confirmation follows years of rumors regarding a potential Obi-Wan solo project, including a possible feature film. Reportedly, Solo's disappointing box office returns scuttled plans for a big-screen Obi-Wan movie. It's not clear if the upcoming Disney+ series is a reworking of Lucasfilm's previous project or something brand new.

In the past, McGregor has said that he's been open to reprising the role, which was originally played by Alec Guinness in the first Star Wars movie. McGregor played Obi-Wan in all three of George Lucas' controversial prequel films, and last appeared as the Jedi master in 2005's Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith. The Obi-Wan show will be one of a number Star Wars projects slated for Disney+, including the live-action drama The Mandalorian and an untitled series starring Rogue One's Cassian Andor.

Previously, a report by TMZ indicated that Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Crown) would helm and write the Obi-Wan movie. TMZ also provided a glimpse of the movie's potential plot. The film reportedly would've focused on Kenobi's time as a hermit on Tatooine watching over a young Luke Skywalker. When a war breaks out between the desert planet's moisture farmers and vicious Tusken Raider tribes, Obi-Wan is forced to come out of hiding and intervene. Luke's adopted parents, Beru and Owen Lars, were also set to appear in the film.

Kenobi is easily one of the franchise's most beloved characters. He trained Anakin Skywalker, who ultimately turned on Kenobi and the Jedi Order and became Darth Vader. After Anakin's betrayal, Kenobi goes into hiding on the desert planet Tatooine, where he quietly watches over Anakin's son, Luke, until he is ready to follow his own Jedi path.

Aside from the Obi-Wan series, there's plenty of Star Wars action on the horizon. Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker will premiere on December 20, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on his own trilogy of films, and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will launch the first film in their Star Wars series in 2022.

Updated on August 15, 2019: Added confirmation of the Obi-Wan TV series.

I've been paying for Netflix for years and not really ever using it. I liked it when you could actually find new movies. My SO likes some of the Netflix series and that's the only reason I keep it.
But Disney + seems like something I'll get. Marvel, Disney, Lucasfilm, Fox, sounds like a great mix of properties.

I'd love to see how he deals with the Jedi Hunt, along with any interactions with Fett, Maul, and of course, a Vader parallel. And any encounters with young Luke.

How 'Obi-Wan' Series Could Unite the 'Star Wars' Trilogies

August 27, 2019 11:53am by Rosie Knight

Will the Ewan McGregor Disney+ show be the thread that connects past, present and future?

Obi-Wan Kenobi is coming back, news that made fans rejoice when it was confirmed Friday at D23. But could Ewan McGregor's return as the Jedi knight be even more significant to the larger Star Wars mythos than it seems? According to the official Star Wars timeline revealed at D23, the new Disney+ series will take place after Revenge of the Sith (2005), during Solo (2018) and just before A New Hope (1977), which has potential ramifications for the future of the ever-growing franchise.

The Rise of Skywalker sizzle reel released at D23 reiterated the importance of connecting the three trilogies by using footage from George Lucas' original trilogy, as well as his prequel films. Though Rise of Skywalker, which opens Dec. 20, will be hitting screens first, the Obi-Wan series has the opportunity to firmly cement the three eras of the franchise as one, with Obi-Wan as a throughline. Viewers first met Ben Kenobi as a hermit living on the desert planet of Tatooine, hiding from his former life as a Jedi. The reluctant hero took on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) as a Padawan after Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) asked him for help saving her from the Empire. Played by Alec Guinness — in a role that would garner him an Oscar nomination — the wise Jedi soon became a fan favorite and core part of the Star Wars franchise.

When Lucas returned to the franchise with the prequels, Ewan McGregor took on the role of Obi-Wan, and fans got to know the man behind the hood. The young idealistic hero wanted nothing more than to find the Chosen One who could bring balance to the Force. In reality, his journey was far more complex as he lost his mentor Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and tried to save a boy who would ultimately turn to the Dark Side. As his past in the Star Wars films showcases, Obi-Wan has already played a major part in two eras of the trilogy. McGregor even had a small part in the new franchise in The Force Awakens, with his voice whispering "Rey" when the young scavenger finds Luke's lightsaber in the basement of Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o) Cantina. The Star Wars comics and animated series' Rebels have revealed a little of what Obi-Wan was doing in the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. During the 2017 Star Wars series written by Jason Aaron, readers got a glimpse at Obi-Wan's diaries that teased his life as a desert-dwelling ronin of sorts, wandering the sand dunes and helping where he could without revealing his roots as a Jedi.

This seems like a potential premise for a show, but there could be ways for it to work with a popular Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker theory, which states that the film will focus on hunting down Sith/Jedi artifacts. Could Obi-Wan have spent his time after the execution of Order 66 (which saw the eradication of the Jedi) trying to secure these vital artifacts? The Obi-Wan series also has the potential to answer other questions raised in the new set of films. How did Maz ended up with Luke's lightsaber? Was Palpatine active in between the trilogies? And as the show crosses over with the Solo timeline, could we learn more about the origins of Enfys Nest and her role in building the Rebellion? Will it include Obi-Wan's nemesis, Darth Maul?

No date has yet been set for the Obi-Wan series, but as McGregor told the crowd at D23, after years of vague comments from him, it feels good to be talking about it in the opening.

Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series adds Deborah Chow as its director, ‘Drive’ writer penning scripts. Fucking stacked with talent!

obi wan tv series deborah chow

Jesus Fuck, is Disney adding talent to its Obi-Wan series. It’s tapped the director from shows like Better Call Saul, American Gods, and Mr. Robot to helm the entire thing. And, its brought in the writer behind Drive. Like, let’s fucking go!

/Film:

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Deborah Chow has been tapped to direct the yet-untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring McGregor as the fan-favorite character.

Disney didn’t have to look far to find Chow, who has directed two episodes of the highly anticipated upcoming Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Chow also comes to the series with quite an impressive resume in genre shows and otherwise, having directed and worked on shows such as Better Call Saul, American Gods, Lost in Space, Jessica Jones, Reign, and Mr. Robot. The Canadian filmmaker made her feature directorial debut with 2010’s The High Cost of Living.

“We really wanted to select a director who is able to explore both the quiet determination and rich mystique of Obi-Wan in a way that folds seamlessly into the Star Wars saga,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement accompanying Chow’s announcement. “Based on her phenomenal work developing our characters in The Mandalorian, I’m absolutely confident Deborah is the right director to tell this story.”

Chow comes onto the Obi-Wan Kenobi series as the scripts have all been finished and eyes a production start date of 2020. The series will be written by Hossein Amini (The Alienist, Drive), who serves as executive producer alongside Chow, McGregor, Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (The Queen) and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Jason McGatlin, Lucasfilm’s executive vice president of production, will serve as co-producer.

McGregor confirmed at Disney’s D23 Expo in August that he would be reprising his role as the wise (and dashing) Jedi Master in the Disney+ series, but a full cast has yet to be announced. Few plot details have been revealed about the series, which takes place eight years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and during the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story. This could mean that the series could see Obi-Wan facing off with his old enemy Darth Maul, who made a splashy return to the galaxy in Solo.
