I have always kind of had issues with him per say. Differing opinions for sure, he was for a long time someone that put Prince's out put down a lot, and I always thought we all have our opinions but he seemed like this guy that was so glued to a time period of an the artist that he could not let go, and its weird because he was not part of it at all, I can see those who were in it taking issues with it, but you are a fan like us, deal with it and if you don't like the 90's and on move on. I remember him dogging Prince on the internet stuff and using lawyers and taking down sites and this and that to protect his work, and now he is almost saying, "where's the protection"? He got on Prince for everything he seemed to do, and I was always like, what is your problem dude? The overall point is what would Prince think and guess what we ain't gonna know where he would stand on things coming out after death, because there was no will and no plan, oh wait that was something another FAN dogged him, Spike Lee.

Spot the difference?

The difference I see is that neither of them really knows Prince or "how his mind works, and what he would have wanted" because he never allowed anyone to really "know him" the true man that only he knew that he really was. Some may think that they really knew him, but honestly, no one will ever completely figure the man out, not in this life time! He doled out what he wanted us to know, and kept hidden very well, what he didn't want us to know, and took with him to his grave! Even his death is shrouded in mystery, just like he lived his life, so what makes these two think that they have him all figured out? Nope, guess again!

It isn't though. Literally the first half of the message is him grappling with other people hearing Prince's music because somehow their intentions are less artistic than his.

I’m a conflicted @Princefan. Used my connections/privilege to get access to things I heard/acquired that y’all haven’t. Mainly because the demo/rehearsal process was how I felt I got to know how his mind works as opposed to the final approved product he wants us to see (there is a 4 hr Baby I’m A Star rehearsal that is prolly the best skeleton forensics display of how all these small ideas turned into a funk powerhouse) but yeah owning Prince stuff y’all didn’t know about made a bro feel special.

So it’s like “I want his music out there!” But it’s like “uh...now everyone is gonna have what I have!!!” then it’s like “but now it’s clear sounding” but it’s also like “I lived with these 4th generation hiss cassettes all my life will it feel the same now that the quality is clear? (I still have my hiss version cassette of The Black Album that i still stick to) so conflicted. This 1999 release is prolly the most revelatory release of his cannon: if you pay attention you can clearly hear his morphing.
This release also shows how “normal”/“human” he was. The secrecy & mystery of Prince was KEY to his success. Like to hear him laughing at himself on “International Lover” demo knocks his creative jenga perception to pieces. Like imagine if the “Do Me Baby” outtakes had bloopers/jokes in it. Also the whole “New Power Generation” (here Bold Generation) being created near 10 years before its 1990 release (I assume for The Time?) weirded me out. (Like did Prince run out of ideas in 1990 that more than half of GrafBridge was already years in the can? Like is my music hero....mortal!!??) but I really admire his ability to EDIT. Imo the alt “How Come U Don’t Call” is a staggering heartbreaking work of perfection. Yet I see why the less dramatic 3 min version was more effective.
mostly I’m sad that the more we discover songwise....the closer we get to closure and finality of saying goodbye for real. I mean i know 78-88 has 2000 songs & a gazillion rehearsal jam hours logged in—-so it’s like he is still here. But soon imma have to come to grips....that he isn’t.

RIP sad

Yeah fuck him, people cape for him because he’s famous. If that was DrFunkberry (sp?) or some mysterious rich dude making those remarks about other fans, you’d hear a different tune. I don’t know who’s more insufferable, his entitled ass or those who kiss his entitled ass and patronize/condescend other fans by saying “he didn’t say anything/ya’ll took it out of context”. Well that is part of it but it's not that part which has people riled up.

The bolded bits are what have people complaining. Poor Quest won't be special any more because the great unwashed can now own the stuff he's collected and kept to himself.

It's exemplary of why I've never bought any of idiot's so-called music: It's all about him, not trying to help anyone else as Prince tried to do.

Questlove says Prince didn't make another record he liked since 1988 when The Roots hasn't made a great record since Things Fall Apart. I can see why Prince kept distance between him and Questlove because Questlove is annoying and oversteps boundaries. Let's not forget how Questlove wrote that IG post that was WAY OUT OF POCKET https://instagram.com/p/7UXlHGwa3V/?taken-by=questlove

To be fair & play the devil’s advocate, this doesn’t come as too shocking because I’ve seen so many mirror that sentiment here in the Org. Last few years of P’s life were kinda questionable to the fans what with the lawsuits, forcing the Times/Family to change their names etc. I still don’t care what he thinks of Prince’ music post-Lovesexy or what type of relationship he had with Prince, that’s his prerogative. But the way he addressed other fans and how salty he was that they’re getting what he paid for with his privilege/connections, confirmed what rubbed me off the wrong way about him for the longest. Sigh! It is what it is.

Fully agree! Really disappointed by his post. I remember that once as he did a DJ party at First Avenue : he was proud to say "I'm wondering where it comes from" by playing Wonderful Ass in a prestine quality (long b4 PR Deluxe release).

I don’t know, man. I admire the reverence he dedicates to other living legends ala Questlove Supreme podcast, but he has always rubbed me the wrong way whenever he talked about Prince in general or how he teased fans non stop about music they’ll never get to hear in the past in specific. No worries, we finally get a glimpse of hope via this new release,,and what does he finally say? He’s conflicted that we got to hear it after he dedicated his privilege/fame to get what we haven’t lol what an obnoxious & cliquish thing to say, P’s music was not made solely for him to enjoy. You’re not gonna share those multiple outtakes of “Do Me Baby”? Brilliant! Shut the fuck up & enjoy it in silence. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t stop rolling my eyes whenever he mentions Prince’ name. And this is coming from somebody who wants to like him. [Edited 11/30/19 11:53am]

Ya that is pretty much my only gripe whe he said he doesnt have room in his heart for his music past 88. Scott Woods tweeted he is entitled to his opinion, but at the same time we shouldnt be looking at Quest as THE Prince authority just because he owns the original Rude Boy button (paraphrase) lol

That said, I love the hell out of the podcast. Supremely (no pun) grateful for the HOURS long Jimmy Jam Interview

He just saying what he feels, he's not taking out an injunction to stop the release, he's just saying 'hey, I like that it's out there, but it rubs the shine off a little bit for me'. I'm sure most of us have felt that way about something at some time or another. This is the thing about social media, when you express a passing thought, it gets written in stone and everyone can have their little say about it too and the ones who stamp their feet the loudest get to shape the conversation.

Right! And because it’s social media, it’s naive not to expect a response to what he says, obviously he wasn’t speaking to himself when he made those posts. Everybody have the freedom to express what they say, he does and so do the people who reacted to his words too, otherwise don’t be on social media, simple as that. As for your other point, as cliquish/obnoxious prince fans can be - and god knows they can - they haven’t lost the spirit of sharing or wanting P’s music to reach as wide an audience as possible, the ones who used their clout to acquire stuff we don’t have, have the common courtesy/sense not to whine about us getting it. It’s not the first time he said stuff like that & won’t be the last time folks call him out on it.
