Yeah..... total nonsense.

There's the vaguest of similarities to one part of the verse melody line (the first line of the first verse, basically, for comparison). But it's not the same at all. Different cadence, differnet phrasing, not even fully the same melody.

It's like saying Prince ripped off Steely Dan because he also had lyrics where one word came after another to form a line.

Nonsense.

If I were going to accuse Prince of borrowing from Steely Dan Let It Go isn't the song I think of.

I’m usually pretty open-minded about this stuff, but I don’t hear any resemblance at all.

One Steely Dan song contains the same amount of chords as an entire Prince record.

Letitgo does have a little New Jack Soul (Teddy Riley), but nothing by BB.

On a separate note, this song is a severely underrated Gem. The entire album is brilliant.

One man's meat is another man's poison.

.

But let's establish something... at the time of its release, "Come" was the shoddiest excuse for an album Prince had ever cobbled together. It was - and remains - a sonic skidmark.

.

As for Bobby Brown, the song the other poster was reminded of was "on Our Own" from Ghostbusters 2.

See, what you have there regarding the Come album is an opinion. And of course everyone is entitled to their opinions. But you seem to be presenting it as fact. I happen to think your opinion is a literary skidmark, but I'll present it as an opinion and respect your opinion as such. (I love the Come album by the way. Apparently "sonic skidmark" is a new genre that I need to explore.)

The whole "one man's meat" part was where I was acknowledging your opinion.

.

But regardless of whether or not you like the songs on "Come," let's get real - at that point in his career, Prince was essentially insulting his fans by foisting this deliberately half-baked mess upon them.

Not even remotely close to Letitgo. You're hearing waht you want to hear. No similarities whatsoever.

I've been listening to this album, 'Come' a lot lately. I think it is one of his best.

I bought Steely Dan's Aja back when it came out in 1977. I love this album. I know this ablum like the back of my hand. I never connected the two before. I listened again to both songs with your comment in mind.

'Deacon Blues' is jazzy and LetItGo is pure funk. I think maybe if there is anything similarities it is in the horns at the beginning of LetItGo and the horns in Deacon Blues. But it is a very thin resemblance.

In studing Prince's music and the music of other's I've found a lot of borrowing going on. It's all over music. Artists are influenced by each other. They may unconsciously pull from things they hear or some may consciencely. I think it is inevitable.

You may personally LIKE the songs on this grotesquerie, of course. Heck, I LIKE some of these songs ("Papa" and "Dark" are the two champs).

.

But one thing it cannot possibly be is "one of his best." There is a world of difference between a personal "favorite" and an objective "best."
